People to Meet

On the Internet, discussion groups are a great way meet people who share common interests. They provide a way to share information, ask questions, solve problems and connect with others. Listservs are an email-based discussion format and there are many of these available. We have highlighted some education and distance education listserv groups that you might consider joining, however, it is not a comprehensive list. Please also visit http://edweb.gsn.org/lists.html, which contains a larger list of listservs in the area of general education, k-12 education, educational technology and education reform. Here you will also find background information how to subscribe, send messages and unsubscribe from listservs.

We have also included some organizations and/or associations which offer their members different services related to educational technology and distance learning.



A major focus for adult learning is for adults to acquire literacy skills. LEARNER is a moderated literacy discussion group for adult learners to practice their newly learned reading and writing skills by posting messages to the list which can be read by other new learners. To subscribe to this list, send a message to with the body of the message containing the line "subscribe LEARNER your name".

The Virtual University Gazette is a monthly electronic newsletter for distance learning professionals working at the adult and post-secondary education and training levels. VUG is issued free via e-mail the first of each month. Each issue includes news of new distance learning programs in both the academic and corporate sectors as well as job opportunities and links to online learning hot spots in the virtual university movement. The "Gazette" is produced by geteducated.com, which indexes many valuable adult learning resources. You can subscribe via their website, or by sending the single word SUBSCRIBE in an e-mail message to .

For other sorts of Adult Learners, listservers are usually integrated into the content area of the instruction. For information on these specific listservers, it would be best to first find a course in the area of your interest.

Organizations/Associations:

PBS Adult Learning Service offers information about PBS programming and services that support adult education and distance learning. It also lists national organizations, including the following:

American Association of Community Colleges: national voice for two-year associate degrees.
American Council on Education: the nation's association for coordinating higher education.
The College Board Office of Adult Learning Services: assists colleges with recruitment, instruction, and assessment of adult students, and assists adults with decisions about college study.
National University Continuing Education Association: the principal US organization for continuing higher education; assists institutions of higher learning and affiliated non-profit organizations to increase access through a wide array of educational programs and services.
